 EARTHEN DAY EVERY DAY

Every April we tip our hats to the living planet we live on, grow out of and one day return our bodies back to.  We call this day "Earth Day,” as if we had spent the other 364 days somewhere else!

Many of us have been caught up in our feeling bodies, inhabiting fear, anxiousness and ambition rather than inhabiting the inspirited world. The gift in this special day lies not in making us feel guilty for what we have or haven’t done, or in the relief that we might feel after a 12 hour show of green solidarity. Rather its gift lies in the way it reminds us of our everyday work making us the quiet and persistent heroes of the earth that we are, the caring participants in the co-creative world and our moral response-ability to protect, restore and celebrate the world in which we are a part!

Our inherent calling as caretakers is to take an active role in the health of the area we live in. That means taking responsibility for its problems as well as credit for its improvement. We can take care of the land that we live on whether we own it or not, whether it’s an acre of breathing soil or patches of green around an apartment complex.  We can each play whatever small role we can by:

  •  Recycle

  •  Bicycle more

  •  Compost

  •  Drive less

  •  Make your home energy efficient

  •  Plant wholesome flower-full gardens

This year Earth Day will be celebrated on April 22. Any realistic hope for environmental relief lies within each and every one of us. Let’s keep the celebration going the other 364 days by really responding from a place of holistic knowing and fulfilling our personal, most meaningful purpose – to protect the planet earth.

  ANJA'S READING ROOM

This months book documents both the increasing isolation of children from nature and the urgent need for a "child-nature" reunion. There has been a lot of talk about this book and the Boston Globe has called it "an absolute must-read for parents." Richard Louv, the author of six previous books on family, nature and community, is expert at conducting thorough research and presenting evidence in a reader-friendly way.

Unlike children one or two generations ago, children of today don't play outdoors much and tend to be sedentary, resulting in an epidemic of childhood obesity. "LAST CHILD IN THE WOODS - SAVING OUR CHILDREN FROM NATURE-DEFICIT DISORDER"  documents the growing solid evidence that an indoor, solitary childhood is linked to learning disorders, attention difficulties and higher rates of both physical and mental illness. An ongoing relationship with nature provides children with invaluable experiences: freedom, quiet, beauty, opportunities for curiosity and awe at the simple wonder and miracles of life.

For the welfare of children and to develop the stewards of the environment that are so much needed, Louv calls fro a change in this trend and spells out the way to get there. If you haven't read "LAST CHILD IN THE WOODS" yet, you may want to head straight to your local book store. This one is a keeper. Enjoy!

HAVE YOU BEEN SWIMSUIT SHOPPING YET?

If you have and been depressed at what you saw, you have plenty of company. According to the National Health and Nutrition Survey, 58 million adults ranging from ages 20 to 74, are overweight. The weight loss industry makes in excess of $40 billion a year, but up to now, has lacked the fundamental clinical understanding of the problem of weight control.

Take, for example, the word DIET. It implies a negative connotation right out of the gate and, even scarier, look at the first three letters and tell me what it spells.....DIE. The word diet also implies something that you do temporarily.  So, you diet AGAINST your normal patterns of behavior (which are in your subconscious mind), and you release a little weight (temporarily). But, because your subconscious mind likes to keep things consistent, it will regulate your body to go back to what it was doing before the diet. Isn't that true? Diets work, but not for the long term. Any diet that you cannot stay on for the rest of your life is doomed to fail because you will regain the weight and more when you go off the diet. It is essential to find the deeply rooted cause of the problem and change the fundamental belief system in regards to over eating in order to allow permanent change to take place.

Your subconscious mind holds all of your beliefs, beliefs that you may not even be aware that you have. These are the beliefs that keep the weight on your body. That doesn't make your subconscious a "bad guy" and there really is no one at fault here. The subconscious just does what it is programmed to do and somewhere, it received bad programming through the suggestions it picked up through your five senses: hearing, seeing, taste, touch and smell. In addition, your habits play a big role, as do your emotions. So, no matter how hard you try to break a habit at a conscious level, the subconscious is much more powerful and will win you over, eventually causing you to go back to what is considered "normal" for you.

To get a clearer understanding, let's look at how we learn. We make a decision to learn something, and through repetition, it becomes hard-wired into our subconscious mind. Once it's in the subconscious, out conscious mind is now free to do other things, primarily analyze and make decisions. Can you imagine if you had to rely on your conscious mind every time you went to drive your car, write a sentence, read a book, speak or play sports? Do you remember when you first did these things? They were completely conscious endeavors. Now that they have formed into existing behavior patterns within your subconscious mind, they are there for you, without even thinking about them. Now, imagine un-learning these things!!!!! For example writing with your left hand if you're right handed or learning a new language and forgetting English at the same time. This is how hard it is to change your habits when it comes to food or weight or anything else.

Using the power of hypnosis and speaking directly to the subconscious mind, we can speed up the process of change by changing the programming. The subconscious mind readily accepts new information when you bypass what we call the critical factor, which is what happens during hypnosis. In order to make permanent changes in your life, it is necessary to get your subconscious mind in agreement with what you want to accomplish....rather than fighting and struggling to work against it, Hypnosis will have you WANTING to eat the right kinds of foods, WANTING to drink more water and WANTING to exercise.
