USE IT OR LOSE IT.......KEEPING MENTALLY ALERT

Exercise of the brain is just as important as exercise of the muscles. As we age it's important that we keep mentally alert.

Below is a private way to personally gauge your loss or non-loss of intelligence.

ARE YOU READY TO HAVE SOME FUN? Great! Take a deep breath, relax and clear your mind........now begin.

1. What do you put in a toaster? The answer is bread so if you said toast, go and do something else.

2. Say "silk" five times. Now spell "silk". What do cows drink? Cows drink water. If you said "milk" please do not go on. Your brain is obviously overstressed and may even overheat.

3. If a red house is made of red bricks and a blue house is made from blue bricks and a pink house is made from pink bricks and a black house is made from black bricks, what is a greenhouse made from? Greenhouses are made from glass. If you said "green bricks" what the heck are you still doing here participating in this exercise??

4. If the hour hand on a clock moves 1/60th of a degree every minute then how many degrees will the hour hand move in one minute? If you answered "360 degrees" or anything other than "one degree" please, I'm begging you, set down your pencil and leave the room....NOW!

5. Twenty years ago a plane was flying at 20,000 feet over Germany. At that time, Germany was politically divided into East and West. During the flight TWO engines fail. The pilot, realizing that the last remaining engine was also failing, decides to make a crash landing. Unfortunately, the engine fails before he has time to land and the plane crashes snack in the middle of "no mans land" between East and West Germany. Where would you bury the survivors. East Germany, West Germany or "no mans land"? You don't, of course, bury survivors!

6. Last question......are you ready? No calculators for this one please. You are driving a bus from Brentwood to San Ramon. In Brentwood 17 people get on the bus. In Antioch 6 people get off the bus and nine people get on. In Pittsburg 2 people get off and four get on. In Concord, 11 people get off and sixteen people get on. In Pleasant Hill, 3 people get off and five people get on. In Walnut Creek, 6 people get off and three get on. You then arrive at San Ramon. What was the name of the bus driver? Oh for Pete sakes! It was YOU. Read the first line.

What did you determine? Are you losing it or are you still a MENSA candidate?  Thanks for participating! Remember, results are confidential. I will know what category you ended up in when I see you next.

  OUT OF THE ASH

I recently had the good fortune to spend time on the Big Island of Hawaii. While I was there I visited Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The Kilauea Caldera still oozes hot lava and has been since 1983, making it the most active volcano on earth. It is here that Pele - The Volcano Goddess -challenged a young chief to a holua race and lost her life.

Many visitors to the island feel drawn to Pele and stop to make offerings to her. I have made it a quest this lifetime to visit as many spiritual sites in the world as possible and this one was definitely on my list. It has been said that while here, one should take a moment and reflect. As you can see by the picture, many people leave offerings, such as foliage. However, after much reading I discovered that, if a visitor feels spiritually compelled to connect, then one should offer a ho 'okupu. The ho 'okupu of highest value in the Hawaiian culture is one's word.

I took the 12 kilometer walk that was incredible and very diverse. It starts off on a beautiful rain forest trail, with blooming ohi'a trees and lots of bird calls. Then it proceeds down into and across a lava-floored crater, where stream rises from the cracks. It is so black and looks so desolate. But if you take a moment to look into some of the cracks in the lava, you will see green plants growing and forming a miniature jungle beneath the crater floor. If you ever have the opportunity to visit the Big Island of Hawaii, please take time to make the 96 mile drive from Kona to the volcano. I can assure you that it is an experience you will remember always.

NOVEMBER 15TH - BREAK THE CHAIN FOR LIFE

Despite the known dangers of smoking, 47 million Americans still choose to smoke!

Most people who want to stop smoking are just plain tired of it, but the thought of smoking lingers and the habit prevails. They keep lighting up to satisfy their habit saboteur and instead of getting relief, they get frustration, anxiety and even illness.  If you are really tired of cigarettes and smoking controlling your life, use your subconscious to kick the habit.

Smoking is less of an addiction that it is a difficult habit to break. If harmful habits were easy to change and could be broken just by saying so, people wouldn't have the physical and mental health problems that most addictions cause. Science has demonstrated that when you do not smoke for three days, there will be little or no traces of nicotine in your blood stream. Therefore nicotine will no longer be the cause of your smoking addiction. It stands to reason that, if nicotine isn't the problem, it is the habit that has been ingrained in your subconscious that you need to change.

Habits are subconscious patterns of behavior, something that you do repetitively with little or no conscious control. Smoking often seems to just happen. More that likely you are in the process of performing some other conscious act, such as writing or talking on the phone, as you light the cigarette and begin to inhale and exhale, enjoying every drag until you put it out.

Even though the addiction to smoking may feel very physical, the smoking addiction has been scientifically proven to be more psychological than physical. Changing your mind to change a habit is the only method proven over a century of time to work consistently well in the removal of unwanted behavior, especially smoking!

To change a habit you need to change the pattern of your behavior from the inside out. If you want to quit smoking but just can't get smoking off your mind, your mind is no longer working for you but against you and it needs to relearn good habits. For more information about how Anja Health Center can help you quit for good, call (925) 516-2868 now!

Let face facts....the real cost of smoking isn't about the dollars....it's about YOUR LIFE! The Great American Smoke Out is November 15th. Join millions across the country and get your health back for good!
