The abundance that
modern life offers us tends to overwhelm
us, which leads to an emotional
overload. It is this overload that will
distract you and scatter your efforts
and concentration.
The first step in
overcoming procrastination is to get
really clear on exactly what you want
from every area of your life. This
clarity will give you the power to look
beyond distractions that may throw you
off course. The truth is, most people
know what they need to do to create
their life that way they want it. The
challenge is not in knowing what to do,
but in doing what you know.
We all know that
results can only be achieved by taking
action. What stops us dead in our tracks
is failure.......especially fear of
failure, and by not taking action we
avoid the potential of failing.
The ridiculous
truth is that these "fears" are mostly
conjured up (by you) in your mind, and
they are not even real. Your beliefs are
formed unconsciously by life experiences
and the meaning that you take from it.
The way you walk and communicate with
yourself is a form of hypnosis and most
of us give ourselves a really hard time
when we "mess up". We indulge in
negative self talk, which ultimately
creates disempowering beliefs about our
abilities and capabilities.
To truly overcome
procrastination requires control of your
internal communication. What you say to
yourself, about yourself and your life,
will eventually determine what actions
you take.
Below are six key
elements to overcoming procrastination:
-
Learn to see
procrastination, not as a curse, but
as a challenge: as the necessary
"weights" to build your emotional
muscles.
-
Decision is the
father of all action. Action flows
from decision. Learn to use and put
to work the power of a real and
congruent decision.
-
Human behavior
is largely driven by beliefs and
this is also true of
procrastination.
-
If you have
disempowering beliefs that cause you
to associate pain to certain
actions, you will avoid it
(unconsciously) and procrastinate =
you procrastinate to avoid the pain.
-
Examine the
beliefs that you hold about
yourself, your identity, for it will
determine what you are willing to do
and ultimately controls you ability.
-
Learn to take
the long view by focusing on the
pleasurable, and not the painful
tasks, that will give you the
results. Your focus equals your
reality.
George Bernard Shaw
said "People are always blaming their
circumstances for what they are . I
don't believe in circumstances. The
people who get on in this world are the
people who get up and look for the
circumstances they want, and if they
can't find them, they make them".
